fishing packages flats fishing in march

Spring and clean water are here, and it’s time to go Flats fishing in March! The river has been beautiful as we hoped the clean water would arrive in February. Like our bay boat, we had to deal with some good wind in February, making sight fishing tough. On those beautiful days when it all worked, we’ve seen many fish out on the flats.

The big Black Drum have remained in the skinny water but have gradually begun to split into smaller schools holding onto the deep pockets on the flats. It still offers plenty of shots to put a hook in one targeting smaller schools of 3-5 fish. We’ve begun seeing many belly-crawling redfish with the super shallow water out on the flats. Spotting the fish out can be easy on the clear flats, but the fish will remain picky in clear conditions. We tend to find more success with the redfish when they’re swimming in smaller schools or with a partner. It seems that when there’s more than one fish, they’ll feel a little more comfortable and get a little more competitive over baits, turning less of your casts down.

As February pushed through, we hoped to see warmer water temperatures for the Snook. With the clear water and the warmer days of March, it shouldn’t take long to reach those temperatures where the Snook likes it. We have run into good handfuls of schools of Snook piled up shallow with no success in getting them to eat due to the temperatures, but that should change in March.

The river fills up with quality bait, which is always a good sign for trout fishing. As spring continues to set in, our trout fishing will become a focal point on our trips. With the rivers inclining in health over the past few years, those grass flats that used to hold so many trout are beginning to improve. There are lots of great mornings ahead, slinging top waters for trout. As per usual, on our 18ft Beavertail, we love to fish artificially, but with picky fish, we’ll always have some live bait on the boat.

Check out our bay boat if you’re more interested in fishing live bait for bigger fish. Our website has more information about our rates and availability. You can also book a trip flats fishing in March directly on our flats boat charter
