We started getting into March Nearshore Fishing season, and we had some great days in February, making it work with the weather we had. We had lots of good Black Drum and Triple Tail fishing, as usual. It is a great start to the sheepshead spawn, catching some really quality fish. We are excited to be moving into March nearshore fishing season, and hopefully, it will bring some of that warmer water that February didn’t have. We will continue to see more great days of Black Drum and Triple Tail fishing as the colder water lingers around at the beginning of the month, with those fish primarily eating crustaceans like shrimp, crabs, and sand fleas.
March Nearshore Fishing
We will also get to experience some great Pompano fishing when the conditions are lined up. Pompano can be tricky as they are always moving, so you really just gotta be out there to get on one of the great bites. Throughout this time of year, all the way to the end of summer, we’ll begin to have large schools of Snook in and around the port, which will begin to become a more frequent site. As the warmer water makes its way in, we’ll see those residents Snook starting to bite more consistently. The colder temperatures can make the Snook very lethargic, so we’re looking to see an increase in their activity as we roll farther into March.
Once the water temperature rises, we’ll notice a slowdown in the Triple Tail and Black Drum bite. During this time of year, as the warmer and cleaner water pushes from the south, we’ll begin to see the Rays working down our beach.
The past few years, the Cobia fishing off the Rays hasn’t been as good as it’s historically been, but based on some reports we’re hearing from down south, we might get a push of fish up our way. As we keep rolling into Spring, more of our focus will shift towards larger live baits to our bigger predator fish like Snook, Triple Tail, Cobia, Tarpon, and Drum. However, we’ll still have a lot of success with smaller bait fishing for Snapper and Sheepshead.
If you enjoy more of a shallow water site fishing trip, the month of March nearshore fishing can also be a great time to hop on our flats boat for a ½ day charter.
