It’s definitely been a cold, windy, and a rainy winter. Hopefully, February brings some calmer seas and sunnier days for offshore fishing.
You have some options for offshore fishing; deep dropping is open to catch Golden Tiles and Yellow-edge grouper. Both are delicious eating fish and make for a great pictures. If you’re interested in this trip, our website has a detailed description of deep drop fishing charters, or you can book the deep drop trip directly.
Bottom fishing in February will be limited to catching Amberjack and Vermilion snappers. Unfortunately, all grouper fishing is closed till May 1st. With most of our full-day trip, we can split up the day. So we could run out, do a few hours of bottom fishing, and go deep, dropping the rest of the day.
Other Types of Offshore Fishing
Trolling or Dredge fishing can be productive if we can find an edge or weed line to fish on. Depending on the water temperatures, we could have chances of catching Mahi, Blackfin Tuna, Sailfish, Bonita, and Barracuda. I tell our clients that trolling can go from 0-100mph instantly. You have to be patient; it takes some time to find the fish, but nothing beats the sound of that drag screaming when you get a bite. This is the best time of year to catch Sailfish if that’s on your bucket list.
The difference between Trolling and Dredge fishing: The main difference is that while Dredge fishing we are pulling dredge bars. These bars consist of skirts and ballyhoo that mimic a school of bait. We run the dredges 20-40 feet behind the boat under the water. This technique allows us to draw the fish and get them fired up to eat our trolled baits. So, we are technically trolling; we troll a little slower and use more of a dropback method when we get a bite. While just trolling, we move a little faster, covering more ground, and when we get a bite, the drags are set to hook the fish.
